I had my fireplace cleaned today. The service man went on the roof to inspect the chimney. He told my there were cracked tiles which show signs of a flue fire. He said it does not meet NFPA code 2-11. He told me it would cost $2400 to fix. Does normal wear and tear cause this or have I had a fire I wasn't aware of. What should I do ?

These are clay tiles? Is there a cover over the top? Without a top, rain will cause a crack if it hits a very hot tile as will a fire. Don't think you would not know you had a chimney fire, it sounds like a jet engine and billows copious black smoke. Depending on where and how far down the crack(s) may be, you might be able to use fireplace or wood stove cement to repair the crack if you can reach it/them. What do you burn? Wood or gas? What would they do for $2400?

Thank you for responding. Yes, they are clay tiles. I would like to think I would know if I had a fire and I have not experienced anything like you describe. I burn wood in our fireplace. Probably a cord each season. He said to repair it they would reline in with stainless steel. Is this something my husband can fix? As you can see I don't know anything about this. I feel like he is trying to rip me off. My husband was not here to ask questions. Thank you again for your response

Hey Maryt01, glad to help. Yes, the common retrofit is to use a SS liner and fill the cavity around the pipe with lightweight concrete. Can you husband do it? I would say no. I've done minor repairs, tuck pointing etc and would never try to do a liner. Believe me, you would know a chimney fire. Get another free inspection.
