The fuse on the mains board has tripped, we have removed all appliances from the power points and turned them off, so there is nothing running off the area which the fuse connected. We have tried many times to turn the switch back on but it still won't, need help

Where are you located.

Fuses do not trip, they open. To repair a fuse you must replace it with a new one.

It sounds like you have a circuit breaker. They will trip and you just reset the breaker by pushing the handle back to the on position.

If the beaker trips, as soon as you flip the switch there is more than likely a "Short" in the circuit that the switch controls.

If this is a light switch, check all of the light bulbs that the switch controls.

Sometimes a light bulb can short and take every other light bulb out with it. For example a fan with multiple light bulbs.

Beyond that, you will need to hire an electrician to find the problem unless you know how to test circuits.

Cheapmum, your question is very confusing? Do you have fuses? And if so it is very necessary to use the correct size fuse. What you have at the end of a fuse is a copper tit (if you will) If this copper tit does not come in contact with the connection behind the fuse entrance, you have the wrong fuse and power will not be restored. After installing a fuse you can check it with a meter by touching a lead to the wire to that fuse and the other lead touches a ground lug. Should get approx. 120 volts +or - 4 or 5 volts.. You in a danger zone while attempting this testing to begin with when the cover is off and it must be to test. If you don't know what your doing, hire a professional..

One more thing Cheapmum, if in fact you do have fuses, they'll be at least 2 pull out blocks with 2 long redish brown fuses, if their blown, they'll need replacing with the proper size only. Everything has a reason for what it is and shouldn't be changed...

Again I ask where you are located. I need to know the country where you live.

For example if you are living in England your general use branch circuits operate at 240 VAC, 13 Amps. However if you are here in the U.S.A. our general use branch circuits operate at 120 VAC, from 15 amp or 20 amp. Speciality branch circuits can operate with much higher amperage.

Can you take a picture of your panelboard with the door open so we can see the style panelboard that you have and post it to this thread. Do not remove the panelboards cover, we just need to see the style panelboard you have.

Thanks everyone, sorry forgot to say that I live in Australia and we now use safety switches on our electricity mains board. All fixed by local electrician during the day.
