We're trying to replace a toilet in our house that is about 18 yrs old. We bought a standard toilet and found that it doesn't fit. Then we found out from the internet blogs that there are 10,12 & 14 inch rough ins. Ours measures barely 9 inches from the wall to the floor bolts. Is there a toilet that will work?

10" most likely. 9" from the wall or trim? There is usually a little space available but it will be tight. Measure the old toilet and see what it is.

Like Brian said, you got a tight one there but a 10" rough in toilet should work if you have a tendency to pull the toilet forward on the toilet bolts when setting the toilet. Here, DRYFIT THE TOILET before using a wax ring and that way if it doesn't fit you can still return the toilet (once wax touches it you can't usually return them).

Another alternative is to purchase an 8" rough in toilet, but there is only one manufacturer (I think it is DURAVIT... the happy series) and these toilets run $500.00 to$600.00 or so,so it is worth trying the 10" rough in first.

Finally, the only other alternative would be to install an OFFSET CLOSET flange but this usually requires a plumber to install. This can make your 9" rough in a 10.5" rough in and will make the 10" toilet work perfect!

Also, there is TOTO toilet that uses same size toilet bowl but comes with bases of different sizes. If I am not mistaken they go from 6" rough in all the way to 14" rough in. See the pic. TOTO toilets are considered to be one of the best. Back to you... Milo

I ran into a similar problem in my new house. They put in the rear bath wall but someone measured for the rough from the back if the plate, not the front, I had 8 1/2" Fortunately it was a wall where I had back access. I cut a 24" wide X 72" arched niche, studded the sidewall, put drywall on the back and used a 12" rough that sat the toilet in the niche. Added shelves above the toilet for storage. Looks great and an easy job, adds some class to a basement bath. But, the simplest thing would be to try the 10, as Mark said, Take off the baseboard and if necessary notch out the wall at the base, the tank should be OK. If the 10" fits, play around with some vinyl base or thin tile. You can do it!
