I just rescued a Labrador off the street a few days ago.This is my first puppy. My dad told me he thinks he may be only one month old. I've gotten him used to going outside and walking around in the backyard with me and we will also walk in the front yard. When I put the leash on him he doesn't move at all. I pat my legs and tell him to come but he doesn't seem like he wants to leave the yard. I really need help on how to get him used to the leash. Any suggestions?

If dad is correct that pup is far to young to be away from the litter and the mom. Take him to a vet for a quick look, maybe determine his actual age and what shots are due. 4 weeks old is pretty young to try and train on a leash, make sure he gets his parvo shots as soon as possible before you take him out on the streets and out visiting.

Buy a small light leash, ones from the dollar store will work fine, and put it on him while you guys are at home. Take a few pieces of kibble, and stand in front of him holding the leash in your hand. Call him by his name and show him the kibble (although, if he is only 4 weeks, you will have to wait as this is far too young to be on hard kibble). When he starts to walk, tighten the slack on the leash, but do not pull, just pick up the slack, and praise and offer his treat. Leave the leash on him (supervised at all times) and let him walk around by himself on the leash, offer lots of praise and a few pieces of kibble every 20 seconds or so. Remember to do short training periods, 5-10 minutes at a time so he doesn't get stressed out and relate the leash to being stressed. As he gets older he will realize that the leash equals walk and play time.
