It was running just fine yesterday then today on way home it started knocking an bogging down and the exhaust manifold was glowing cherry red when I looked under the hood.

Did the temperature gauge indicate it was overheating?

Check the catylitic converter. Sounds like it is clogged or your car is running to lean of a fuel/air mixture
