We have a new home in NSW and as per council requirements we have had installed a rainwater tank. Problem is it doesn't fill up when it rains. Go figure. We have checked the downpipes and they appear to be all clear. We have checked that the pipes leading into the tank are clear. We don't really understand how the system works other than we thought if it rained then the water would flow down the drain pipes and into the tank?

That's the idea: downspouts are routed into rainwater tank and then water is distributed from the tank for irrigation. Question: is the tank ABOVE ground or UNDER ground ? What material is it made off ?

In the interim: take garden house, and try to fill up the tank. See if it holds water. If possible, snap couple of good photos of the set up and post it for us to see. Back to you. Milo

Hi Milo, The tank is above ground and is polycarbonate. We have filled it and ensured it is not leaking. When full everything.works well. We have stood out in the rain to check that no rain is coming through the feeder pipe?

Hello Cathieflynn, good to know New South Wales now requires rain water recycling.

I would check the downspout for clogs. First, take a ladder and see if the inlet is clear. It may be blocked by leaves or even old bird's nest. While up there, take a garden hose, insert it into gutter and turn water ON. Observe if water is running through.

And if the water doesn't drain through the downspouts then treat them like a blocked drain and snake the pipes. But I'm betting the garden hose will do the trick for you. Follow Milos advice.
