What can I do if I am served a lien on my home?
I am disputing what I owe a contractor. I just got a certified letter in the mail from a Master Leins company so I am sure he is trying to put a lien on my property. Should I pick up this letter? Doesn't he have to prove what I owe him? I can prove what I owe and checks cashed. He thinks I owe him more. What should I do? What if he puts a lien, then we never sell the house until I die? How much would I owe then? Thanks for in advanced for any advice.

A "mechanics lien" is placed without court action, and you want to receive the document to know what time frames you have to contest it. You will have to file to prove it is not true.

It is the one of the few liens that can be placed without a judgement.

You can contest the lien. Also, in some areas, the lien has to be proven within a certain amount of time.
