    Sayco stem 16138B (11B-7H) expensive
I am looking for a Sayco Stem 16138B (11B-7H) and the cold one too. Well these things start dripping a lot within some number of years 2-5 and then I replace them. I have replaced them about 3 times already and those times the stems where about $26 each. Well now the only ones I can find are at Lowe's and they are $73 each. Is there any possibility of using a different stem in this same housing? Or do I need to replace the whole thing to get out of this nightmare cycle?

    Hi David...

No, you can't swap out to another cartridge... specifications simply vary to greatly!

If you want to be done with this I would suggest installing a single handle SYMMONS valve (see images)... cost is about $100.00 and they almost never need repair. I've been installing the symmons valve for over 30 years now and not only are they great valves but even repairs are super easy and cheap (the entire stem assembly is only $40.00).

If you have a two or 3 handle valve you will also need to purchase a symmons "goof plate" to cover the holes... see image.

Glad to discuss more in detail if you want, OK?

How much does labor cost to do what? Install or repair?

Here, I can tell you that either way we aren't going to be able to tell you what labor would cost. Cost to do work is region specific.

If you want to know what labor costs call 3 plumbers and get estimates for the work, OK?

    Good luck!

So, this is what I ended up doing. I ordered:
    1 of "Danco 17420B 51 3C Stem And Insert" - SKU 6965420
    Unit Price: $5.69

    1 of "Danco 17419B 51 3H Stem And Insert" - SKU 6926042
    Unit Price: $5.69

These have the same plastic part at the end, but the stem is plastic and short. So what you have to do is carefully take them apart and take your old unit apart and use the longer brass stem from your old unit and replace the short plastic stem that comes with this unit. With a little super glue and some plumber grease you can get it back together and it is working for me and I saved about $160.
