    NY, NJ Taxes recently maried and changed jobs
    Ok here is my story:
    I was working and Living in NJ from January till May and earned X
    I was working in NJ and Living in NY from May to the end of November and earned y
    I changed jobs on Novemver 27th
    I was living in NY and working in NY from November 27 to end of December and earned z
    To add to the complexity :) I got married on November 9th, and my wife was living in NY all year. My wife is a full time student with no income


    How do I go about state taxes in this situation?
    Please Help, my head is spinning

    You need to file NY and NJ returns. You file as part-year resident for both returns.

    You pay taxes to NJ on X.

    You pay taxes to NY on Y; the credit you get for paying NY taxes will mostly if not totally offset any tax owed to NJ on Y.

    you pay taxes to NY on Z.

    You can file jointly on all returns because all governments consider you married for the ENTIRE year regradlless of when in the year you got married.
