I have a 2000 Honda Civic LX. For the past three weeks when I've started the car in the morning it will run for about ten seconds, then the RPM's drop and the car dies. It will restart but die again. Thing is, after repeated restarts it stay on long enough for the car to run warm up, occasionally with a slight dropoff in RPMs, but the car doesn't die. After that it runs fine, and it won't do it again for the rest of the day. Until the next morning. Only recent repairs I've had is the igniter was replaced. Any ideas?

Replace the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor, which affects fuel injector pulse width. The ECT Sensor is a temperature dependent resistor (thermistor), whose resistance decreases as the engine coolant temperature increases. It provides a richer mixture when cold, leaner mixture when hot. They become corroded, due to not changing the coolant frequently enough.

Thanks for the reply. I changed the etc sensor and that helped for about two days but now its doing it again. The loss of rpm's happens more than the car actually shutting down.

This definitely sounds like a distributor related problem. I would install a brand new (not salvage) igniter and coil. Be sure to apply silicone heat transfer compound to the back of the new igniter. If the problem persists, install your new igniter and coil in a new genuine Honda distributor housing. All new aftermarket distributors and distributor housings are suspect, in my experience. Alternatively, install a new complete Honda distributor.
