    Combo Anode Question
Massplumber2008, I read an answer you responded to regarding changing a secondary (combo) anode rod using a curved pick.

I got the nipple loose that the anode is connected to, but can only pull it out maybe an inch, right to the outlet hole of the plastic sleeve.

I got pretty aggressive trying to wiggle it out! It's like the plastic upper part of the anode next to the nipple is larger than the opening in the tank.

Do you think that your idea of" yanking" it up through the nipple with a curved pick would work, even if I can't get it out with the nipple loose?

Thanks for your time, You really seem to know plumbing a lot! Kevin

    Hi Kevin...

A combo. Anode rod can be tough to get out, for sure! Try rotating the combo. Rod as you pull up on it. Here, take a wrench and as you are spinning the nipple on the rod, pull up on the nipple with the wrench... should pop up and out for you.

In the picture below you can see that the anode rod isn't larger so it is the plastic that is getting hung up. If you pull up as you spin it out it will come!

Let me know what happens, OK?

    Mark,

You mean, take like a channel lock pliers, go down through the top of the nipple and pull up at the same time spinning it clockwise like I'm taking out a bolt?

Is the plastic piece suppose to be that tight coming out?

Am I going to have the same problem putting the new anode rod in?

    Thanks! Kevin

    Hi Kevin...

I mean take a pair of pliers and while spinning the nipple (outside) pull up on the combo. rod as you spin and the rod should come out after a few spins/pulls up/around... real hard to break off so don't be afraid to beef on it, for sure. Be clear that the anode rod itself will probably be the size of a rat's tail (used up) so that probably isn't the hang up here.

And yeah, the new combo. Rod plastic is tight going through but once you are past the plastic part the nipple screws in easy... ;)

Hi Mark, I gave it a college try. I stood on a ladder over the top of he water heater and pulled and spun the nipple as hard as I could! But it will not come past the outlet holes in the plastic insert in the nipple.

Geez... that stinks! If you post a picture maybe I can see what the issue is. If you post the pic. post the pic. Of the rod up as high as you can get it, OK?

    Thanks...
