I just purchased 200' of ThermoFlex from pexsource.com and had some questions before I bury the line. Does anyone have recommendations on how deep to bury the line? I have heard to go below the frost line and then I have heard to bury just below the surface. I just want to make sure I do it right the first time and prevent heat loss. I am using a wood boiler, does that make any difference? Any help is appreciated!

For example, I'd like to know:

Are you using this for for heat piping or for hot/cold water supply?

Is this material being used outside or inside?

Finally, why use the thermoflex preinsulated PEX... looks super expensive and really hard to say if it is worth your money here? Let me know more.

This will be for outdoor use, going from wood boiler to house. I have a family member who used ThermoFlex last year and was very happy with the product and said in their opinion it was much better then the wrapped product.

They used theirs for hot water transport but my application will be for heat piping. I am just unsure of how deep to bury it, it has 1% heat loss per 100' and I just want to make sure I do not cause more heat loss. I have heard to bury it below the frost line and then was told by another source to bury it just below the surface. Just want to make sure I do it right the first time.

Hi Connor...

If you were to properly add a hydronic antifreeze to the system then you may be able to bury the pipe say 6-12" below the surface as long as no heavy equipment will be going over the trench in the future (not going across driveway, for example).

Otherwise, you will want to plan on running the pipe to below the frost line as you first thought... can dig this trench or may even be able to rent a trenching machine to pull this off for you (call a local rental store).
