Website Copyright: Current year or range of years?
Which is more appropriate for the copyright?

Do you just show the current year, or show the range of years that the site has been up.

    Or

    © 2005-2007

    Thanks!

    I wouldn't put a date, just (c) Rick Jackson

But that's me, I don't think there is a specified etiquette for it

With the amount of Prior Art claims that are doing the rounds I would use a date range.
Look at M$'s copyright statement when you boot your XP machine.

I'm surfing... and finding it mixed about 50/50. Microsoft uses just the current year, Ask Me Help Desk uses the range.

I have yet to find a big one, though, that has no year at all.

    Yahoo, 2007
    Google, 2007
    MySpace, 2003-2007
    MSN, 2007
    eBay, 1995-2007
    Amazon, 1996-2007
    Wikipedia, no date
    Craigslist, 2007
    CNN, 2007

... so I guess I'll be a lemming and show the year... and maybe just flip a coin for whether to put a range or the current year :p

Nah... I do think I like the range better...

The range also lets people know just how long you have been around.
    Nice advertising point there. ;)

    In general:

Use the date that the material was created. For a static page, you should have a single copyright date. Revisions to the page will make it a date range from the first date to the most recent revision.

For anything dynamically generated, it should be the date range from the earlier of the layout and the oldest content that will be presented to the current year.
