How do I choose a topic of research on linguistics?

The best way is to find out what topics are 'active', because that is where you will likely find people willing to help. I assume you are a university student, so if you contact the linguistics grad students (professors may be too busy for you) they can suggest a field. I suggest the field of "Pragmatics" which is an area of some interest right now.
