I am a nursing student and have an assignment that involves asking an RN 8 Questions.
I don't personally know any RN's so I hope someone here can help me. Here are the questions.

    1. Name

    2. In what type of work place do you practice?

    3. Do you administer or dispense medications or vaccines?

    4. What is the main source of reliable information you use before dispensing drugs?

    5. What are 2 other sources you recommend?

    6. What would you name as the biggest risk to you when giving drugs?

    7. What is the most dangerous drug you have ever dispensed? And why?

    8. What is the best advice you would give to a new nurse about administering drugs?

Magnesium Sulfate as it is a smooth muscle relaxer.

Make sure that there is no known drug allergy, be sure you know the side effects, and be sure that the drug ordered is appropriate for the medical diagnosis.

Thank you so much for answering these questions for me Janine. Your answers will not only help me get my assignment done, they will also help me as I pursue my nursing career.

One further question... It's about the magnesium sulfate...

Why does the fact that it is a smooth muscle relaxer make it dangerous?
Note: I do know that smooth muscle is found in hollow/tubular organs such as the stomach and uterus.

    Think carefully about MGS04.

What signs and symptoms do you need to look for hourly when using it?

What should remain at the bedside while using it?

Check reflexes , and BP hourly (for hypotension). Watch for respiratory depression. Cardiac and nervous system depression could occur.

I see now why it is so dangerous... you are making me think and this is good.

Very good. Now, what do you need to keep by the bedside?
