What to do about the debt from credit cards after husband death?
Hi my husband passed away in July this year and we live in manitoba
Everything was just in my husband name except that we shared a bank accout
Now I have the credit card company calling me and asking for the money to pay for these
    Credit cards
What am I to do who has to pay for them and I don't have the money too

    Sorry for your loss.

Unfortunately you are responsible for paying these loans. If you don't pay them, your file will be sent to a collection agency and your credit will take a hit. You can either declare bankruptcy or borrow the money. If you choose to declare bankruptcy, they may reposes your house, car, or any other assets. My advise would be to either borrow the money, sell your assets to pay for off the loan, or declare bankruptcy.

You are incorrect - the creditors CAN and probably WILL make a claim against the estate. The OP is not responsible for paying these debts personally.

We take pride in our answers and you are 100% wrong.

Joint debts are her responsibility. His individual debts are not.

Of course, if she inherits the estate it is reduced by these bills BUT she is NOT personally responsible for them.

How do I know? I'm a widow. What is your experience or education in this matter?

If the credit cards were solely in the husbands name and you were not listed as a co-signer or user, then they are debts of the estate not you personally. I would double check on the law in manitoba on marital property, but I don't think it will apply to personal debts.
