My cat urinated in a couple places in my basement. I've tried everything to clean the mess and make the odor go away. I've shampooed it and used carpet cleaner, pet deoderizes, etc. but nothing seems to help, the stinch still remains.. Any suggestions?

Replace the carpet.

It's gotten into the pad, and possibly into the cement beneath.

You are very likely NOT going to be able to get rid of the smell, especially if you can smell it this time of year. Your cat has probably been urinating in that spot for some time.

You can TRY a professional cleaner, but they probably will not guarantee it (our company won't guarantee anything with cat urine).

My basement is huge, I'm guessing it would be very expensive to do that. Plus the fact I have a pool table and other big pieces of furniture that I'd have no place for if I got the carpet replaced. I tried putting rugs over the spot, but I don't watch her 24/7 so I'm not sure if she still urinates there or not.

It's very likely that she does. Unless you remove that smell, a cat will go back to the spot they have marked over and over again.

Granted, I'm not a vet, but I work in the carpet cleaning industry, and our guys will NOT guarantee cat urine. If you can smell cat urine in the winter, when it's cold outside and generally low humidity, it means that it has steeped into that area very badly.

Take a black light through your basement, and see which areas glow green. You can identify cat urine under a black light VERY easily.

However, if it has soaked into the pad, no amount of cleaning is going to get that smell out. You may have to pull up at least that portion of the carpet and replace it and the pad underneath.

You know the color of a Mountain Dew can? If you turn down your lights in the basement and walk around with a black light, you'll see spots that color. That's cat urine.

Seriously... it's unmistakeable once you see it. Coffee looks green too... but nothing glows in the dark quite like cat urine.

Try using a product called Natures Miricle . It can be found in pet stores in pints and 1 gal size. It is an enzyme that breaks down the urine and other stuff that causes the odor. I used it in a house I bought that had over 20 cats living by themselves. After scrubbing and stripping and throwing out carpet I used this stuff and it worked very well.

Another thing to try is to retrain the cat. Growing up on a farm when cats peed someplace unwanted, we rubbed their noses in the spot and made them uncomfortable. Stopped the cat cold.

Good advice, shu, thanks. I'll try using that product, and if no luck, I'll probably just rip that section of carpet out and replace it.

If your cat is urinating outside of the litterbox, he/she may have a UTI.
Urinary Tract Infection. I suggest you take the cat to the vet

I agree with Shudama, Natures Miracle is about the best stuff you can buy. It has microbs that actually consume the urine. You will need to allow it to be wet for a day or two and the shampoo again. The black light works great and will keep you from wasting the product or relying on your poor nose.
