In the ceiling, I have two blacks, two whites and two reds. I know that some service an unswitched connection to another outlet that I don't want on the wall switch.

In the wall switch box, the top is connected black and the bottom red. My replacement fan has a light kit with a blue lead and of course the white and black.

I know white to white. I am confused about the reds. When I connected one or both reds to blacks, the unswitched outlet either did not work or was switched (to wall switch). I know this is easier than I have made it. Any suggestions?

Need to test the blacks and reds to determine which is hot all the time, usually the blacks, and which are switched, usually the red.

If this is a ceiling outlet, which wires were the ceiling fixture connected to?

Does not make sense that two blacks and two reds are spliced through, and none were for a light fixture. This may be a 3 way switching splice. Is there two switches for the outlet?

What does the wall switch control? More than one fixture?

Also, when you install the fan, do you want both the motor and light to be controlled by the switch, or just the light?

Right now, I disconnected the reds and the wall switch controls nothing. The light works by pull chain and I do not have the fan wire connected at this time. (When I did, it worked via pull chain as well.) The wall outlet is working as well.

I want the wall switch to control only the light. I do not want the wall switch to control the wall (unswitched) outlet. If the fan operates by pull chain, that is OK.

Theoretically you would connect the blue from the fan to the reds, the black from the fan to the blacks, and white to white. I am a little confused by there is two reds.

Thanks! Connecting the blue fan lead to both reds resolved the issue. The wall switch controls the light, the fan is operated by chain pull and the unswitched outlet is unswitched. Thanks for your help!
