If John died leaving in his will everything to Fred his lifelong friend, but Fred died first and John did not change his Will, does John's Will still stand and his estate carries down to Fred's family or does the line end at Fred's death and so everything now goes to distant family of John? There is no one else named in the Will.

My research indicates that the estate would go to the next of kin pursuant to UK law. The death of the friend negates the Will as far as the friend is concerned.

Dead people cannot inherit.
