What are the pros and cons of being a mechanic?
I am NOT a mechanic by any stretch of the imagination but I enjoy working on my vehicles. It is a great since of satisfaction to fix something with your own hands. I am considering taking some classes at the local community college. Is this a good idea? Could this be a good career move, eventually?

I think it's a great idea. More people should take time to learn more about their cars.
Being a mechanic has been a rewarding and at times a frustrating career. You will learn the various aspects of what makes your car tick at different paces. Some functions will be easily picked up while other areas will take more diligence. Hopefully, you will save money on car repairs but spend more on tools and manuals.
    I say go for it.

First off you have to realize one thing. There are naturals and there are those that have to work at it. Both can make good mechanics. The real thing that you need to think about is what type of mechanic you want to be. Many work in the automotive field while others work in the industrial field. There are many opportunities for both and both can have a job for a lifetime.

The most positive thing about being a mechanic is that if you enjoy it the you never really have to work. Its like playing all day long.

It is a good job, and if you like it, you could or should follow up on it

I spent almost 15 years as a tech. It was fun, it sucked, it was easy, it was hard... weird, huh? Some days were great and some not so great but overall, it was a good career. The best advice I can give you is if you plan on doing this, try to get into a place that will help you learn. Cars advance so quickly that you need constant training to stay up on all of it. Some places will pay for this training.

    Good luck.
