There is probably something stuck in his throat if he is coughing continuously.

Open his mouth and see if you can visualize anything. Anything wrapped around the tongue, wrapped around teeth... If you cannot see anything, then you're going to have to take the dog into the vet. He's uncomfortable and needs some help.

He might have kennel cough. And it usely kills puppies and old dogs..

Kennel cough is only fatal if there is underlying problem with the dog. I liken it to a human flu... not dangerous to us unless we already have a problem with our lungs or immune system.

Coughs can be a signs of many things, obstructions or abraisons to the throat as Lucky suggested.
Heart murmurs can cause fluid build up on the lungs and cause the dog to cough.
Allergies can cause some dogs to cough.
And yes, kennel cough results in a hacking cough.
