I replaced a remote control fan with a manual op one. I wanted to install a simple wall swith to power unit and I would change direction/speeds by hand. I bought the single pole switch and when I took the remote plate off the wall there were two blacks connected with a wire nut, two whites connected with a nut, a red and a ground. I attached both blacks and both whites to the switch, covered the red with a nut and when I flipped the switch the breaker popped. Did I get the right switch? Should I do something with the two blacks and whites? Help, tom

Connecting a white and a black to a switch will make a short circuit when you flip the switch. The switch should get a hot black on the fed side and the other screw gets the other black, switch just interrupts the flow of electricity down the black wire. That addresses the wall switch but you also need to remove the receiver which is inside the canopy, did you know this? Can you tell us which model you own?

Thanks ballengerb1, I have the harbor breeze classic style model BDB52WW5P. Its wires were white, black, blue(future lights) and ground. I attached the white to the single white in the ceiling, the black and blue to the black in the ceiling, the ground on the hanger to the ground in the ceiling and just capped off the red in the ceiling. Where I'm over my head is what to do with the double black, double white at the wall outlet. I presumed with a single pole switch I'd attach the black, white and ground, cap off the red and be done,no such luck. I appreciate you time, tom

Leave the 2 white wires connected together with wirenut, leave red alone,separate the 2 black wires, put one black wire under one screw of the switch, put the other black wire under the other screw of the switch
