There is a feral cat giving birth behind my shed. I've tried catching her before hand with no luck. She has already birthed two kittens. But appears to have a kitten with two paws sticking out the canal. I unfortunately am unemployed and know she needs a vet asap. But I can not afford to pay for the procedure. What should I do? Contact the local shelter or call vets? If I had the money there would be no question about anything. I do have medical knowledge. If there's anything I can do at home I will try. I've tried pulling on the baby with no luck. I do believe it has passed. HELP, thank you

I don't know much about cats but from what I know, if you believe that the kitten has passed, you need to make sure the kittens already born are getting the attention they need.

Is the queen in pain? Losing much blood? If so its time to call the shelter or vet . If you call the vet but tell they may offer over-the-phone advice which you may not have to pay for.

You should check the yellow pages or Google for any animal shelters in your area; the American Humane Society should be able to help you find a local office (and if you are not from the US, your country may have a similar organization). I really would recommend you call around and see if any of those places will come and rescue the cat/kittens at no charge.

I am a huge cat lover myself and hope that this is something you can resolve, or it will work itself out... I think you should start making calls, though. Nature could either help the cat through it, or she could not survive it at all. Either way, as you aren't a vet you shouldn't go trying to remove the kitten yourself--not only could you cause more damage, the fact that it's a feral cat could mean it has diseases or could simply try to attack you and scratch you up pretty badly. Isbfish has a good point, and I was also thinking about how many people are able to help their own cats through birth, so helping may not be impossible. This advise may be a little late now, though... so hopefully everything will turn out okay. :)

Your best bet is probably to contact a shelter or rescue group. I doubt there's much you can do at home. If the kitten is dead, she may be unable to birth it on her own. She, and any unborn kittens, are in danger of dying if the longer it goes on.

If possible, I would suggest trying to contact an area rescue group. A lot of shelters put down cats after just a day or two, if they aren't adopted. Moms with new litters are almost impossible to adopt out, and I don't know if a shelter would be willing to feed mom and babies for the 12 weeks until the kittens are ready to be on their own.

A rescue group, on the other hand, may be able to get her seen by a vet, and fixed, and then released back outside, if they don't have foster/adoptive homes.

I hope you're able to find a way to get her the help she needs.

Yaaay! Better to lose one than to lose both the baby AND the mom, because the other four would have probably not had a chance without her! I'm so glad the rescue could help, and thanks for the update. >^.'<

I'm glad you were able to find help. The rescue group may even be able to help get the kittens fixed, once they're old enough. Most groups do what they can to help control the feral populations.
