Caught shoplifting in Canada, my first offense, what happens next?
I was caught in a Zellers shoplifting in the amount of CAD $20. The store gave me a letter not to shop their stores for one year. They will also send a financial losses letter which they will use to collect payment from me in the mail.

Luckily, the police officer was kind, and he checked my records and my records were clean. He said since it was my first offense, he was only giving me the warning as I was employed in the Canadian organization and he let me go free.

One more thing is I am a Work permit holder in Canada so don't have any Canadian ID's except health card which they used to record my health card number.

They took only my name, address, DOB and health card number. I wasn't charged by the police officer.

Can anything else happen to me? Please help.

What do you mean what happens ? That is all that happens, there is no criminal record, since the officer did not issue a ticket or charge you with a crime.

You don't go shopping there again, and pay them the money they asked for, and there is no formal record of this in a criminal history

Thanks for your answer... One more question that the store keeper noted all the case management details with my details like name, address, DOB and phone number and gave the printed form to the police officer.I haven't been charged or given my finger prints. The store keeper taken the sign letter of the financial losses saying that hudson bay company intends to collect full compensation from you in Civil court like cost of merchandise, investigator's time and also but not limited to, (bla bla bla). In case if I am not paying they will be undertaking the action of putting me in front of crown prosecutor.
Please let me know if I am paying the amount, all things will be fine?. I learnt a lesson these won't happen it again and I cannot ruin my life by doing so.

I got the letter saying that I need to pay $595 by 11th Oct'2011 as a settlement of charges... Also one more thing is I'm moving from the existing apartment to another city. They mentioned in the letter if I'm not paying they will be a law suit which is in before Civil court and also mentioned it's a out of court settlement which will halt the civil case against you.
Please let me know whether I have to pay the amt or not before I move?. if I am not paying whether it will effect anything because I haven't been charged with police neither I have given my finger prints. But they do have my details like Name, DOB, Health card number, Address details.
    Suggestion needed plzzzzz.

Answered on your other thread. You can either pay the amount to the store and not have a criminal record OR not pay, get hauled into Court and have a criminal record.

That's how it works. You could have been arrested at the time. Instead you were allowed to walk away but expected to reimburse the store.

The fact that you haven't been charged doesn't mean you won't be charged.

Everybody makes mistakes - it sounds like you've learned from yours and that's all that counts.

    Good luck.
