My partner shouts in his sleep but only when he has had alcohol. It is driving me crazy, I don't know how the neighbours have not complained as it is so loud. Even if he has only had a couple of drinks I know it is going to be a long loud night.
He is totally unaware of this and I have recorded it as he said I was making it up, he was humiliated listening to it. I used to love going away for hotel breaks but now the thought of is horrible as I know I won't get sleep, and worry about people hearing him. Same going away on holiday, after 2wks I am exhausted, no sleep, stressed again about others hearing the racket.
I know some people would say well he should not drink, but he works hard all week and enjoys a drink at weekend. I would love to know WHY HE DOES IT!

Are there any sleep istitutes near you that you have access to? It might be best for him to have a sleep study done. It sounds like he actually needs 2 of them done. One without drinking so his sleep patern can be monitored and another after he has been drinking so they can see the difference. The effects of alcohol are well documented as it passes through the body. It may be that something is going on that is stiffling the normal pattern and it could be much more serious then just he talks in his sleep.

He needs not be embaressed about it as he has a medical condition and he shouldn't be ashamed of it. He should want it corrected for the both of you.

I agree with Califdad above. The fact that this reaction is induced by alcohol in moderate amounts sets it apart and probably requires assessment by a sleep specialist. There aren't many.

Your voice recording will assist in the evaluation but in addition it would be very helpful if you record the times of the episodes and note any other accompanying movements such as arms, legs, general rigidity. Regardless of cause those will be important issues.

Finally, your description leads me to believe that your partner is a moderate drinker, if so, you might try: 1) space drinks and limit to no more than one per hour then, 2) cease drinking 2-1/2 hours prior to bedtime. That should allow for elimination of all systemic (circulating) alcohol.

I don't recommend this as a solution or remedy, it doesn't address the underlying issue. Rather it might indicate whether this is an active pharmacologic response or results from residual effects of alcohol. Either way it could indicate an underlying early stage disorder and should be thoroughly investigated.

After testing, we would love to hear the results. Very unusual.
