Help with installing a Hunter Ceiling Fan and Light Control
I'm trying to install a Hunter Ceiling Fan and Light Control switch. The electrical box has a white/neutral wire that is capped. It also has a black (hot) wire, 2 other black wires, and a copper ground wire. The instructions on the fan/light control switch state that it "requires 3-wire wall switch installation". Is this what I have? If so, how do I know which black wire controls the fan and which one controls the light? Is it o.k. To take a 50:50 guess and reverse the wires if needed, or will I cause damage to the fan? Thanks

The white needs to connect to the white, the greens/bares/grounds tie together.
Then if you have 2 separate blacks that are capped, those are likely from the switches.
Place a temporary bulb and socket, a meter or something to see which switches what, need to identify both switch legs, may not be 2?
Can you tell how all the wire are connected to each other, or capped?
What color wires are on the fan.
What colors are on the fan/light control.

Just a thought here, but your installation instructions may be written to comply with the 2011 NEC, which now requires that a Neutral be present at all switch outlets.

If the area you live in has not adopted the 2011 code then your wiring instructions will be dfferent.

Please contact your local State or County Electrical Inspectors to find out what code level you are requjired to adhere to.

    2 other black wires,
Not logical. There should be the same number
Of white wires as there are black wires.

    Look again.

If you want the fan to be on one switch and the light to be on another, you will need 3 wires to the switch, black, white and red. If you want the fan to be controlled by the pull chain and the light to be controlled by the switch you will need 2 wires, black and white.

Did you have a on/off switch at this location originally? If so how was it wired?
