The toilet in the upstairs bathroom near bedrooms (30 years old, separate tank and bowl, tank is near the ceiling) makes a lot of noise when flushed and refilled, water comes out of the bowl and you can hear the loud sound of running water for over 2 minutes before it stops. Possible solutions given are a soft rubber or plastic toilet silencer tube and/or torbec or fluidmaster silent fill valve replacement. What is your opinion and what would the cost of getting this done be?

Was it always this noisy ? The noise comes from water passing through fill valve and/or through angle stop (valve). Usually this noise develops over time as debris gets lodged in the passage ways of both valves. Yes, you can experience with it by installing new fill valve. Just make sure new fill valve is compatible with your tank. Also, I suggest that before you do anything to CLOSE all the way and OPEN all the way your angle stop several times. This will dislodge debris on the inside of the valve and cut down the noise. Let us know how it went. Milo

You have one of those wonderful old timy wall hung tank toilets,(see image) with a chain to hanging down to start the flush. When you say,

do you mean it overflows? While you can't do much about the sound of the water dropping down in the bowl you can do something about the fill noise and length of time to fill. As I recall the last time I worked on one of these was over 50 years ago, Back then the tank had a brass ballcock with a float ball. If you wish to replace with a FluidMaster or standard ballcock I can see no problem. Let us know how you make out. Good luck, Tom
