    Changing Data Nameplate
In order to avoid the hassle in replacing wire size, etc... when upsizing the motor from 30 HP to 40 hp. The motor manufacture is willing to replace the nameplate data from 40HP down to 30HP.
Is it legal to do so and there are any problems that might occur?
    Thanks

I see a lot of problems... because any power requirements will now exceed anything that should apply based on the now incorrect info that would be on the plate.

That means there is a real risk for electrical fire or damage from undersized wires, assuming it worked at all due to breakers that would trip immediately..

The 40hp motor has current needs that exceed those of the 30hp... which means the old wiring is now likely insufficient in size, as are any breakers/contactors that would be required.

It may be legal for the manufacturer, providing they inform Underwriters Laboratories, or whatever third party listing firm they use.

And if the manufacturer accepts responsibility when the motor affects the smaller wire, as Smoothy states, it is still a 40 HP unit, and will draw the current a 40 HP unit needs, and it will exceed the wiring for a 30 HP unit.

Something sounds odd, that they would re-label a motor so you can use the existing undersized wire.

    Thank you all.
I absolutely agree with both of you. It's stupid in doing this.
