    HIPPA and emergency contact information?
Is it a HIPPA violation if a provider realeases only the emergency contact name listed in the patients file to the Hospital after the patient was transported to the ER.

No it wouldn't be a violation as it has nothing to do with medical history. The contact os the person who may be responsible for decisions should you not be able to make them on your own. It says nothing about your condition of health.

No, they have to give out medical info.

But who are they giving the info to and why,

The contact was her mother, the why I don't know obviously the hospital was not going to share that with me.

First of all, it's HIPAA, not hippa.

And no, it is not a violation to send over an emergency contact. It could actually be considered dangerous if the contact were not given.
