I have 3 paintings from D. Gibbs all were bought back in the early 70's. My large painting is of a girl sitting under a tree with her dog. The autobio. Is attached to my painting. The bio. Shows Gibbs standing next to the painting. This is what is saids. Donald A. Gibbs was born in Manhattan in 1937 and still resides both in NY and West Palm Beach. He is primarily, a self-taught artist, although he was a member of the NY Art Students League in 1956 & 1957. Before turning to serious painting as a full time profession, Gibbs spent four years doing free lance cartooning for magazines and trade journals. He is a student of early americana and many of his painting which have a highly interesting antique quality, depict this interest. If my memory serves me I paid $25.00 for the painting. The other 2 I have are smaller, one is the boy walking down a path with his dog the other is a waterfall. I think I paid about $10.00 each for them. I would also be interested in knowing what the value is. I hope I've been of help.

My parent owned an art store in West Palm Beach and Don Gibbs as he went by approached my parents in the mid to late 70's to sell some of his painting in their store. He was a very nice man and did several painting just for my family a Rabbi, a portrait of my mother and a discreet nude woman.

I also have several of his primary woks being landscapes and rural scenes.

I too have several D. Gibbs paintings. I did tape a bio of the artist to the back of one of the paintings, and his REAL name is Donald A. Gibbs, born in 1937. He does have a unique style, and I've seen art on the Internet under the name David Gibbs that appears to be Donald Gibbs' style. Someone else has added the name Daniel Gibbs to the pot of confusion.

The bio that I have, which is about 30 years old, says: "Donald A. Gibbs was born in Manhattan in 1937, and still resides in the New York area. He is, primarily, a self-taught artist, although he was a member of the New York Student League in 1956 and 1957. Before turning to serious painting as a ful time profession, Gibbs spent four years doing free lance cartooning for magazines and trade journals. He is a student of early Americana and many of his paintings depict this interest. he is married and has one daughter."

If this helps. I grew up with Don Gibbs in Garden City, NY. His full name is Donald Archibald Gibbs. He was the youngest of 3 children. Older brother Harry and a beautiful older sister.

Don was a guest artist for several popular cartoonist and often his drawings were those that were in print in Newsday on Long Island. In the 1960's, Don developed his unique style of etching his paintings with the head of a pin.

Although a close friend, he had some idiosyncrasies. He gave paintings as gifts to his close friends bur because he did not particularly like my first wife, he never gave me a painting. When he gave his paintings to some friends, it was always with the stipulation that he be allowed to pick out the frame. As teenagers, all of our friends could not wait to get a drivers license and a car. Not Don. I don't think he ever got a license or a car until he was well past our teens.

Over the years, I lost track of Don but in the 1980's, I purchased 2 of his very large paintings for a bank I worked for in Dania, Fl. From an art dealer. We paid about $1,500. Each for them and placed them in our board room. They were a constant source of admiration from all that visited there. Not to be out done, I found a "Gibbs" painting for myself in an art store in Pompano Beach, FL and paid $175. For it. (In discussion with the store owner, he told me that Don lived in Palm Beach County and visited the store to sell paintings several times a year.) The painting I have and cherish, is of a water scene with a light house and a small boat. I proudly hang it in my living room.

If memory serves me right, Don would turn 76 years old in May, if he is still with us. I hope this helps with those that were curious about the artist, Donald A. Gibbs.

That makes sense I purchased my paintings at a art home show back in the early 70's I was living in Malverne NY right nx to rvc. I was happy to read his method of making his leaves on his trees was made with a needle. I was told he moved to FL.after his divorce. I thing he's a fine artist and needs more credit for his art. I have a D Gibbs painting of a boy walking down a path with his fishing pole. My father bought it somewhere in western Florida back in the 90's. Don't know how much he paid. My mother (a decent painter herself) said my father bought it because "he loved the way Gibbs painted trees." I didn't know he used needles. (Now I do, thanks to this site.) I love to fish so my Dad told my Mom to give the pic to me when the time came. My mother sold her house and had to downsize last year (2012) and gave me the painting then. Dad passed in 05. It hangs on my livingroom wall along with Haitian art, a few of my mother's paintings, and various other paintings. It reminds me of my Dad every time I look at it.
