I have been with my boyfriend for a little less than a year now and one day he said he had something for me. So we went over to his place after he took me out to dinner, and he asked me to turn around so he could give me the gift and when I turned around it was this necklace he mentioned before, and that I have seen on his coffe table. He said it was a gift from an Old Girlfriend (not my ex-girlfirend), and that he wanted me to have it. I asked is this the same necklace you use to wear everyday and he said yes. I was shocked and angry that I left early that evening. I have no idea what to do now: if I should break up with him or reconsider why he gave me the thing in the first place. Please help me I am so confused.

Did he say why he gave it to you?

Men and women think of things differently. For us gals we'd never ever think about giving a piece of jewelry we got from an ex to a new boyfriend. There are many reasons we wouldn't. One, it may have sentimental value, even though we have a new guy, we still care about the old, and the memory of that gift. Two, it's tacky to give someone new something someone old gave you. Three, we love to shop, and getting a new gift is so much better then re-gifting.

With guys it's the practicality of it all. He no longer cares about the ex, but he has this necklace she gave him, and he likes it. He likes you, wants to show you that he likes you, so he gave you something of his that he likes. To him it's not a symbol of a past relationship, it's just a necklace he has that he'd like you to have, because he cares about you.

Talk to him about this.

I can understand why you're upset, because I'm also female. He may have no idea what he did to upset you, because to him it wasn't a big deal.

Are those the words he used? Was the necklace a gift from a girlfriend as in romantic relationship or a friend who is female? If it was a female friend, it could be something that has sentimental value to him like for many people their grandmother's jewellery does.

Talk to him and find out what his thoughts and feelings are for giving you this gift.
