I am no longer happy at my job, there have been a lot off stress involved and I have had two weeks off on the sick with stress and my doctor have just given me another 2 week sick to cover me with stress related to work. I wanted to know how long would I have to wait to be able claim unemployment. I am a single parent with 3 children aged 17 who is not working and 2 boys who are 11 and 15. I get no money from my ex at all. I am willing to work for someone else but not my employers I am with now. I just need advice on if I can claim unemployment until I find another job and how long would I have to wait before I can receive any money. Another question I want a answer too is can I apply for other jobs even though I am already employed and can I apply for other jobs while I am on the sick.

Why would you think you have to wait to look for a better job?

Depending on where you live... you might have to fight to be able to collect unemployment if you quit the job. Most places its an automatic reason to reject the claim. And fighting it you are going to have to not only prove what you didn't have a choice... but convince the people making the decision as well. That's an uphill battle. You MIGHT win, but the odds are stacked against you. THink about it before you jump out of the frying pan and into the fire.

What that means is this... look for another job... say nothing to anyone you are looking... and when you get an offer... submit your resignation. That way you will have an income for sure.

It depends on what state you are in, but in general you cannot quit a job and then qualify for unemployment insurance benefits.

Of course you can apply for another job while you are still employed. Why would you think otherwise?

You can't collect unemployment unless you are laid off.
There are rare instances when you can collect if fired for the wrong reasons, but being out sick isn't one of them.
If your present employer knows you are applying for other jobs, your sick pay will stop. Of course. Why would they pay you to job hunt?
What you should be doing is going to court and getting them to force support from your ex.

Yeah... longshot to collect. I did actually quit a job to a non-illness issue almost 20 years ago... tried to collect later, and claim was rejected... had to file an appeal and did win on appeal and collected... but like I said... uphill battle... "job stress" can and would easily be viewed as you were over your head in that job and thus not qualified. Odds are you would lose... so think twice before you quit without having another job to step into.

I have been with the employer's for 12 weeks and I've been working 48 hours one week and 35 hours the following week I've worked 130 hours but I have been out off the house going from one client to another so I've been out off the house 170 hours I do not get paid for my traveing time either. I've also had to work 4 weeks in advance before I get paid and when pay day came 5 weeks ago I was told I have to work 9 weeks before pay and at the end off 9 weeks I would get paid for only 4 weeks so my employers would always in my eyes owe me 4 or 5 weeks pay. It as costed me £670 in petrol for those 9 weeks and I only got paid £90 in petrol money for the first 4 weeks I worked yet I put in £350 in petrol in those 4 weeks just going from one client to another. I feel I am working my butt off for nothing and my kids are not seeing me either. I'm hard working but all the stress off not getting paid and not getting my petrol money as made me ill. I am living on credits to survive.

My ex is not interested in supporting me or my children. He is the father to all 3 children but he was a drug addict yrs ago and the 18yrs we have been together he's been addicted to his computer and drink. He his now trying to claim half off my house and my car. Yes we were married but the house and car was brought by me with in the first yr off our marriage, No I was not a drug dealer or a lady off the night. I worked for a good company at the age off 14 and never had a day off work until I gave birth to my first two children and then I took early retirement at the age off 29. But I did work 2 jobs after my children to support us and my parents use to care for my kids as my hubby would not. Like I said I'm willing to work but I do not like being used abused or took for granted. I've never claimed unemployment in my life I've always supported myself and my family alone. Just with me working and not getting paid my credit card as been used to pay for the petrol to travel

I am qualified for the job but not qualified to used to cover my company cost and me be out off pocket. It is hard bringing up 3 children alone and to have to work for 9 weeks with out pay and when you do get paid you only receive for 4 weeks. Plus I've paid out a lot in petrol and I may not get any off it back. So instead off working for £6.50 a hour I'm really working for £4 a hour in my eyes if I do not get my petrol money back. I would like to see anyone work for £4 a hour in the uk with out complaining.

Ok.. the fact you are in the UK (something you didn't tell us earlier) will require someone more familiar with the specifics of the UK to respond. My answers were geared towards someone in the USA or Canada. They likely apply in the UK... but I don't have the personal experience to know for certain.

However its clear no matter where you live. You should be looking for a new job. And you should not let anyone know you are looking.

Incidentally... at only 12 weeks you barely know the names of the people you need to work with, much less know the job inside and out. Incidentally, most places and most jobs. If you have a family or not and how many really have no bearing on the job. They pay A person to do A job. A single person will and should get paid to do the same job someone with 6 kids gets paid.

I've been through 7 employers since I got out of college over 30 years ago. There is a steep learning curve when you start with any employer. Even as a degreed engineer (I am).

Why are you unable to do the job with the reimbursement they offer for the use of your own car? Apparently others are or have been able to do it. You can make money on reimbursed mileage or lose money depending on how you do it. That applies in the USA as well. I've done it for years myself. Have you talked to anyone else that does this to ask for tips... or how they do it?

I'll bet they aren't paying sick pay, so while you are home, do some checking on the legalities of their pay period and their petrol reimbursement. In the US, no one would ever get away with paying at the end of the month AFTER the first whole month! Ridiculous.
I agree about asking around with others about petrol costs. Huge difference between 90 and 350.

Of course your ex isn't interested in paying support. That's irrelevant. TAKE HIM TO COURT, now, before he does win half the house and car. Retroactively. NOW. While you are between jobs.

My other co workers are either walkers or stay in the area they live in and all are part time only, I went full time so I get sent away from my area were I work but I only found out last week this is why all the other employers do what they do. We also have a tracker which each employee is supposed to use so the employers know where we are and I've also found out last week I am the only who sticks to my employers rules and log in and out after seeing each client. But I'm paid so suppose to be paid for a job so I stick to the rulles, I never break rules or the law. So my fault in away for my being as sly as my colleagues. Thank you for your advice much needed. :-) even though I'm in a different state.

If you can't at least break even on expenses with your job... then you really are going to have to find another job. My experience with employers is they won't give YOU more money than they give everyone else to do the same job. If nobody does it as a result they will have to raise that number to get someone to do it. The same with pay as well as reimbursement.

Breaking the rules can set you up for a termination at some point... or you might actually get away with it, I don't think the risk is worth it to you.

But as I said and believe... if you can't make ends meet at one job (meaning you need more money) you either have to take on a second part time job ( I know people with three) or find one that pays better. If you have the ability and the skills the look for a better job choice is better.

Employers know they get what they pay for... but it doesn't stop them from trying to get more than they pay for any more than it would anyone else.
