Conceiving after Mirena- Why wait for 2 periods?
    Dear Dr.
I had my Mirena removed June 22 and just had my period July 15. My doctor recommended I wait for two periods before we start trying to conceive. I'm anxious to start this month because it would work better with my job, an art teacher- off in the summers. Is it highly discouraged to try after one period and why? What are the risks? My husband is adamant about following the doctor's orders but I have been reading many women conceive the month after having their Mirena removed. This would be my first pregnancy.
    Sincerely,
    Sarah

There are a few doctors here, many nurses, many people experienced in a topic personally.

You could read 'Bad Reputation' in the current issue of WIRED magazine (August), free online.
It goes back over all the decades of IUDs that caused PID, sponaneous septic abortion, and other conditions as a result of bringing along bacteria when inserting the IUD into the uterus. (The Dalkon Shield could rip the wall on it's way out of the womb). Needless to say, doctors are cautious, at least some of them are.

As for timing... you don't want to give birth after school lets out next year?

As for birth, you can't guarantee when you will ever get pregnant. It takes the average healthy couple up to a year or more of actively trying to become pregnant.

Since the Mirena is a hormonal device, it is best to wait two cycles for your natural hormones to balance back out.
