Maximum length for a water connector

You can pretty much have a WH anywhere. In one of my homes it was 40 ft. from the bath. The problem is how long it takes HW to get to where it needs to go and if it goes through unheated spaces, how much heat you will loose. Depending on howyour house is sited, water comes from a main and may travel 200-300 ft to get to the heater. What is your particular issue, if any.
