I'm 18 years old and I've just enrolled into the Bachelor of Engineering course. I'm applying for some scholarship for which they need me to submit a project which is new, novel, creative and innovative... (and of course,of my level! ;) ) But I'm not getting too many ideas... So can u all help me with it by suggesting some new topics or ideas.

Okay, think a little about your life itself. Have you ever found a problem and thought that people should do something about it to make it better/safer/more efficient/etc? Make a list of problems and try to come up with possible solutions. I'm sure you can come up with many innovative ideas that you might try. :)

HMMMM... I do not get you... wat exactly can I make in non-newtonian fluids that is innovative? Please give me some more ideas.

Thank you sir/mam for the guidance... in fact I was trying to do the same one day... n then I thought about trains. I have a deep interest in trains and their functioning. Right now, I'm staying in India and I was perturbed at the state of trains here, especially the safety measures they have on the trains. I would love to invent or design some system that can improve the safety on trains... But since, I've just joined the B.Tech progamme, I do not have much knowledge perhaps to build something sophisticated. So, can you please help me with that? The project can even be a simple research, but I want to do something of real use... Please help me in this.

I really don't know how your project is supposed to be. Are you required to make a model too? If it's only some sort of thesis, this would be easier because as it seems, I think that you'll have to deal with the model on your own, or seek help with engineers you know in your area. If they have time, I 'm sure that you'll learn a lot too :)

Otherwise, I'll be glad to help you where I can.

First, make a list of things you know about the train system, the good and bad things as in a list, in bullet points so that you have everything in front of you and you know exactly where you can act to make whatever you'll introduce cover most of those shortcomings. Could you try and post them here?

I'm really grateful for your kind support. As you have directed, I'll post the bullet points very soon once I complete the investigatory things. Also, I would like to tell you that the project can be anything from model to a thesis or only some experiments that can prove the vitality of an invention. Since, I am supposed to pursue undergraduate courses from this year, the project need not be very sophisticated. So, I would really love to have your further assistance on this thing.

I tried to find the matter over the internet, but cudn't find somethng good or useful! :(
I did find some engineers in my area but they were either elctrical or mechanical engineers working in a thermal power project.. Now, what to do? Over this time, I even thought about applying some physics to prevent the chances of train derailment. You know, just few days ago, in India, there happened a very sad accident in which an express train running at the speed of 108km/hr had to suffer emergency brakes due to which the train got derailed and many coaches toppled against one another... around 65 people were killed.
So, I was thinking why not to try some concept to avoid such severe consequences. Can we use something related to magnetic braking, but I suppose the indian trains do have some electromagnetic braking stuff (something I read in my intermediate class physics book :) )
Can we still alter this magnetic concept a bit and try to show a model which follows our concept and is safe from derailment? Like, we can use the property of like poles repel each other?

Sure! You have your problem in the big lines, you have an inference. One thing that we don't know, is why exactly the problem happened. Can you ask the engineer that are willing to help you, more detail about the accident, why they think it happened?

Thank you for the suggested links. I went through them and have found a few things of interest. However, still the problme isn't completely getting cleared, Meanwhile, my HIGHLY UNSTABLE BRAIN is working towards changing the topic or something.. hmmm... I know its stupid..
The new topis I thought over was that, while in summers it gets too hot on the roads... the oil tankers carrying oil often fear from the chances of catching a fire.. what about if we find some new and useful measures to overcome this condition..? What say?

Remember it's your project, how about you test/verify it? Try looking for how people usually try to keep liquids cool.

If you think that this system is good, start thinking of what problems might arise if you implement that system, and how to overcome them.
