Why won't the dryer run when I pushe the button? When I push the button it just hums.

The reason it just hums is... it doesn't know the words to the song! Sorry, I couldn't help saying that. Seriously, your dryer may be jammed. So, open the door and try to turn the drum by hand, while the dryer is empty. Is it free to turn? If so, then there is no jam. If belt driven, the belt could be off the pulleys or even broken. I don't have records on every Kenmore dryer, but the 417 prefix tells me that it was probably manufactured by Frigidaire (Electrolux). You could have a bad motor, or just a bad capacitor on that motor.

If the hum is the motor running, the drive belt is probably broken. If the hum is the motor trying to start but not turning, you probably have a bad motor or something has jammed the drum.
