A couple years ago raw sewage spilled into our dirt crawl space. We discovered there was no lid on the sewage pipe and fixed it. We applied lyme and the smell seemed to disapate. However this summer it began smelling again. We discovered a small leak in a drain pipe and fixed it. We also removed the lyme. The smell is quite strong. Is there anything I can put on the dirt that will get rid of this smell? The space is very small and difficult to get into. Ive thought of applying more lyme or dump bleach water over the entire area of sand.

I would tend to agree with you. The Lyme should help with the break down of any solid material and the bleach should kill any bacteria. If it is a small area, you might want to put down some kitty litter to absorb as much moisture as possible. Remove the kitty litter, using a garden sprayer, spray a weak mixture of chlorine bleach.

:) thanks for the lyme correction... This past weekend we cleaned up the lime that had been sitting on top of the sewage. It seems quite dry. Ill try the bleach mixture. What part bleach to water ratio would be good. Hopeful that the sewage smell is from the old back up and not something new.

I would go with about 5 to 10%. The bleach will have an odor also for a short period. All depends on how much you can stand. Agree that the odor could primarily be from old sewage spill getting wet again.
