My black lab has not eaten for three weeks. He drinks just fine. He was throwing up water but has quit that. Took him to the vet and did a thriod test. Gave him some meds to help start eating but nothing has worked. He has lost 26 pounds and counting. Please help

Surely there have been more tests than just a thyroid? Like a complete chem panel at least for starters, and then head towards whatever may jump up from it. Maybe even some x-rays?

I would think that there is an underlying reason for this problem, and even IF your vet can get him started eating, with meds, he won't maintain and get back to normal weight without finding out just what the problem really is.

What other tests has the vet done? This doesn't sound like thyroid issues to me, and I can't believe that the vet only tested for thyroid.

What meds did the vet give? What did he base those meds on? Which tests?

There's more going on here, and more tests have to be done. Why isn't your vet doing them?

Probably got a B-12 shot and maybe some anabolic steroids, like Winstrol-V? (more commonly " 'roids"

I wouold not guess at a thyroid issue, though I am not a vet, but nothing adds up. I would suggest you bring your dog to another vet.

What have you tried feeding him so far? Have you tried a bland meal (boiled burger or chicken) with rice? Have you looked in his mouth for any broken teeth , swollen gum, anything lodged in his gum or tongue? Has he gotten into anything he shouldn't have (cooked bones, does he chew on sticks... ) Has he been de-wormed?

Bella, the de-worming is something I think really has to be checked on.

I've dealt with thyroid issues, not only in myself, but Jasper, our border collie. Apparently he's fine, doesn't have a thyroid condition, but I still bet he does. Overweight (eats one meal a day), flaky skin, you name it. He's got all the symptoms, but a blood test ($110 later) says it's not so.

This doesn't sound like thyroid. If I were to guess, and I'm no vet, I'd guess worms, or cancer.

More tests need to be done to find out what's going on. I would really suggest getting a new vet.

Is it at all possible that your dog could be getting food somewhere else? A neighbor, or even someone farther away, who may be feeding a dog that shows up in their yard occasionally? Has he been neutered?

Regardless of the weight loss, no apparently healthy animal will go without eating something this long, voluntarily.

I can only say "Ditto" on the posts suggesting a second opinion.
My furkids (aka dogs as some call them) are such an important part of my life-well I guess they ARE my life. I am very concerned with your situation. Please take that baby to another vet ASAP. Possibly he has some type of obstruction? If that's already been mentioned, I apologize. If it's a financial thing, hopefully you live in an area that has some sort of assistance. If not, there are online organizations that may help. This sounds like an URGENT thing-you may need to resort to charge cards.
If you're unable to locate assistance (if that's one of the challenges), please pots that on here and I will personally try to locate help ASAP for your furkid.
