My son is age 22 and recently diagnosed with a mental illness. He is receiving disability and living in an apartment where the rent is reasonable, however it is difficult for him to pay all his bills. His dad recently came to town and took a DNA swab? Anyway the DNA was a match. My son actually needs help and will probably need it for the rest of his life. Can we do anything?

I don't see how an adult child could get child support. Usually that's cut off once the child is an adult.

There's nothing in the law that says that a parent has to support their adult child because that adult child can't support himself.

There are programs that can offer assistance to those with disabilities. Apparently he's already receiving assistance. I'd check to see if he qualifies for any other programs. Also, what sort of mental disability does he have? Is this recent, due to an accident? Is this lifelong?

I have to ask, why was the DNA test not done 22 years ago?

Had there been a support order before he was 18, Had his illness been in effect before the time of separation of the parents or before the child reached legal age.

And it appears he is living on his own? If so, then it does not sound like his illness is to a level where even before there would be support
