Old VCR - Step by Step Instructions to connect to Sony Bravia 40" Television - HD
The TV is connected to a cable box (ran in component mode). This works well.

A friend asked me to record something for her and brought over her VCR (an old one). I read the instructions that came with the TV and then tried to follow a diagram that came with the television. The diagram showed to use a two way splitter and this is where the confusion comes in for me. I could not decide if the cable line should run through the television or the Cable Box. I understood that the mode should be Video 2 to use the VCR to record. I am having the hardest time with understanding the video in or video out on each device. Can anyone help me with this?

There are two ways to connect these devices.

First way, is using a splitter:
    - Component out from cable box to TV.
    - Cable from wall into splitter.
    - Cable out from splitter into cable box.
    - Cable out from splitter into VCR.
    - Cable out from VCR into TV. OR Composite (yellow, white, red) out from VCR into TV.

The other way, without a splitter, will record ONLY what is going on with the cable box (which includes pulling up the guide and flipping through it to see what's on other channels):
    - Component out from cable box to TV.
    - Cable from wall into cable box.
    - Composite (yellow, white, red) out from cable box into VCR. OR Cable out from cable box into VCR.
    - Cable out from VCR into TV. OR Composite (yellow, white, red) out from VCR into TV.
