    That would have to be Deng Xiaoping, it was his insight that made China the power house it is today.
    He was more interested in the big picture rather than swift gains.

    Although not properly an economist (he was a lawyer) I would say that Mahatma Gandhy was the greatest. For he managed to help India to gain its independence from the British empire, without any violence on his side.

    Not only, he inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world.

    I have no question in my mind that India is what it is today thanks to Gandhy!
