There was a show that sounds similar to this. But the father wasn't dead, he was an alien. She talked to him through a crystal cube. Read this:

I think you are thinking of a programme called out of this world. The girls father was an alien and couldn't come to earth or he would die. She was part alien and had some powers like being able to stop time. The glass thing was some kind of cross planet communication system
