I was discharged back in 1986 with a other than honorable discharge. In 1989 I was hired as a civil service employee for more than 22 year's now. When I was hired, they never asked to see my DD-214, out of curiosity, can they ask now?

Unless you lied about the conditions of your discharge it shouldn't matter.

Yes they can, in fact since you signed, I would assume a application to give them the right to check your reference, they could normally send off for them. But yes they can ask you.

As noted unless you lied on your application ( which it does sound like by what you did not say) it should not matter, if you lied, you could be fired after all these years

Well that's the thing, they never asked my what my discharge was, the application just asked if I had been in. So there was nothing to lie about. Thanks for commenting.

As an added note, it's a county position within the state. I also have a permit to carry concealed which you need a FBI clearance. I was only told I couldn't if it had been a Dishonorable as apposed to a OTH.

Yes I understand other than, does not effect it. A carry permit is effected by criminal search, they don't search other records from my understanding for that.

Also FBI clearance is a real misunderstanding on a carry permit but they do a basic search to see if there is a problem. I don't believe military discharge is searched.

Next if your position is not one that requires a national security background search again they merely search the NCIC records ( often called FBI search) and it checks criminal records. If a national security background search is done, depending on the level, they will get copies of discharges, school records and more to be cleared at various levels of security. In mine, they even sent people to interview people I have lived next to for 10 years, then they interviewed teachers and even ex workers in person.
They even had "lines" I used to pick up girls in college that I had to explain.

Ahh, I see.. That's interesting. Well, I've no criminal record at all and I highly doubt I will ever have to worry about getting cleared for National Security either. I appreciated your time, thank you again.
