What is a reasonalble amount of child support for a child that would be living in peru with her mother. How does the exchange rate effect the amount owed. It would seem that less would be owed because a dollar buys almost 3 times as much in peru.

If the decree is entered by a court in the U.S. child support will be set according to the guidelines used by that court. Such guidelines do not normally provide for the custodial parent living in a foreign country where the cost of living might be lower. Assuming the custodial parent has the court's permission to take the child to that country, lower cost of living is simply a collateral advantage of the move.

It will be a issue of where the court order is issued, if it is a US support order, the order will be in US dollars and that is what you pay, how it exchanges is not the issue.

If it is done in the other nation, it will most likely be in their money system, and you will have to alter the US dollar figure to equal their dollar figure as exchange rates alter

Ok, thank you for your feedback everyone. I would be interested in the scenario where the order would be coming from peru and I would need to convert it into US dollars. The question in a bit hypothetical, however, this is one of the possible outcomes I would be facing. There is no court order, the mother and child are living in peru and so far they have not lived in the USA. However, I did go down to the US consolate with her in peru and transferred US citizenship to him and I had to sign a form saying that I would provid financial support until he is 18, so provided they stayed in Peru and I stayed in the USA I was curious what an amount of financial support would be in Peru currency and tnen I could exchange it from us dollars from there.
