    Artist--somewhere between 1959 and 1962
There are many groups that sang "Gloria." One of my favorites is the Cadillacs. However, there was another version--late 50's or very early '60's---the same words, BUT the lead singer cries in the middle of it. Can anyone tell me the artist---most likely a group. Thank you.

Are you perhaps referring to Patti Smith? Here is a link to where I found the answer to your question: Gloria.

To ChemCatalyst: Thank you for trying, but that's not it. Gloria is more a
Doo Wop style. It has been sung by many groups in the 50's/early 60's. It starts "Glo-re-ee-a, It's not Marie ee ee. Glor ree ee a, it's not Cherie ee ee. Glor ree ee a, but she's not in love with me eee eee. Can't you see, Glo or ia, ...."

The Manhattan Transfer did the song as well.

Was it "Shadows of Knight" the early 60's Version of Gloria!

I just checked the Web for "Gloria" by Shadows of Knight. I found the lyrics, and it is an entirely different song. I think I made a mistake in my initial question saying that the year of this song was 1959 - 1962. It's more likely l955--to 1958. It's a slow doo-wop ballad. In it the lead singer breaks down and cries--sobs. Thanks to everyone for your interest. Anyone else?

    Hi Ken,

Not sure of the group u mean, but just a thought, you could do a limewire or similar music download search, that might bring up lots of different groups who sang "Gloria"

There were roughly 30 doowop versions of the song "Gloria" done by the Cadillacs. The groups are: 1. THE CADILLACS 2. FIVE CHANCES 3. VITO & THE SALUTATIONS 4. LOVE NOTES 5. THE PASSIONS 6. EGYPTIANS 7. ESCORTS 8. HI - LITES 9. CHARIOTS
    10. VALIANTS 11. TROY PARRISH 12. NEW YORKER'S FIVE 13. DEL LOURS
    14. CHAPELAIRES 15. FRANKIE FRIER QUINTET 16. SULTANS 17. GEMS
    18. THE CHANNELS 19. FIVE DISCS 20. STEVE COLT & BLUE KNIGHTS
    21. LEE SCOTT & WINDSORS 22. UBANS 23. ARTHUR LEE MAYE & CROWNS
    24. YOUNG ONES 25. FIVE THRILLS 26. LANTERNS 27. DEE CLARK 28. BEN E. KING
    29. NICKY ADDEO & DARCHAES 30. THE MILLS BROTHERS

The Mills Brothers recorded the original "Gloria". Esther Navarro at Joz records plagiarized the song by adding slightly different lyrics.
The version you heard with the artist 'crying' could have been either The Young Ones on Times Square label or Nicky Addeo & The Darchaes. I owned both of these once and I remember some crying in one of them.
I have not heard every version but have heard The Cadillacs, Vito & The Salutations, Passions, Channels (released in the 1970s), Mills Brothers, Young Ones and Nicky Addeo & The Darchaes. Hope this helps some.
