My girlfriend had a baby by another man and I help her raise him until he was about 6 months old, shortly after that we broke up. She left him in my care and really hasn't had much to do with him since we broke up. He is now a little over a year old and I have been taking care of him by myself since we broke up. I have had him nearly 10 months. She only calls every now and then and only takes him for a day or two every month or so, this is of course when I make her talk to him and spend time with him. Is there anyway I can adopt him. So, that he will be mine and I won't have to put him through this anymore?

First, you need to obtain guardianship for the child from Family Court. Right now you have no legal standing. I'm not sure how you are making medical or other decisions for this child. Without guardianship you have no legal right to.

Once you get guardianship, you can then see about adoption. You will have to qualify according to the laws in your area (ANY question on law needs to include your general locale as laws vary by area.). You will also have to get the permission of BOTH biological parents.

One of the problems here is that, as soon as you move towards guardianship and adoption the mother may decide to take the child back. So you NEED to consult a Family Law attorney to do this right.
