My rover was running good 2 days ago and now it will not start. I have already bought a new spark plug and that did not help. When cranking it just cranks and whenever I try to press the gas pedal or apply the choke to see if it helps it just makes a loud scratching noise. I am not quit sure where this is coming from but my dad says its coming from the carburetor which I really don't think is the problem. Please help :)

First, check for spark.

There is a spark.

. Before installing the new plug, did you check the gap? You need a good, solid spark.

. If it's 4-cycle engine, which it looks like it is, check the level of the oil. Ensure the oil has been recently changed--you don't want it to seize. I recommend you only use full-synthetic engine oil (e.g. Mobil 1 SAE 5W-30). Air-cooled engines need all of the protection they can get.

. Ensure it's full of fresh gas.

. Remove and clean, or replace, the air filter.

. Remove and fully charge the battery. Most auto parts stores will do this for free.

If it still doesn't start, remove the spark plug, spray starting fluid in the cylinder, replace the spark plug, and try starting the Rover. Repeat this sequence, if necessary.

Do yourself a favor and only use full synthetic engine oil. You will get much better performance, the engine will last much longer, spark plugs will last longer, and you will have less down-time.

That's all I'll buy from now on.

Change your oil, after the engine has reached normal operating temperature--it's faster and you get a more complete drain.
