My son just turned 16 and I gave him the keys to my truck so he can have a vehicle. I recently told him he needs to cut his hair in order to get a job. He refuses to cut it and I told him I may take the keys until he does. He now hides the keys. He is away at scout camp now and he gave the keys to his 19 year old brother and I asked him for the keys because I need to use the truck. He refuses to give them to me. This is my truck. It is very frustrating. He is treating me like a child. I don't want to get nasty about it, but I am the father and this isn't right. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

This is a little out of whack.

I would have a new key cut for the truck. Then I would install an alarm system, that operates only from your new set of keys.

Or, if you are not planning on using the truck, and want to stop anybody else from using it, have the plates removed, and cancel the insurance.

You could also advise BOTH your sons that if the keys are not in your hands by supper time tomorrow, you will report it stolen the next time it leaves the driveway. Then do it.

I presume if your 16 year old doesn't have a part time job, he's not paying for gas or insurance. The cost of him having the privilege of driving, depends upon following the rules of the house.

No haircut, no truck.

You only have one set of keys? Why would you give away your only set? Get something like "The Club", a steering wheel lock that will prevent it being driven.

But I have to say you need to learn to pick your battles. If your 16 yr old doesn't get a job then you cut off his allowance. Provide only essentials. Forcing a child to get a haircut in this day is really a losing battle.

As for the 19 yr old. If he defies you like that, tell him he has 30 days to find his own place to live.

I am very sad to say that you have lost control of not only your vehicle, but of your children, and your household. The nineteen year older needs to be put out.
If you give the boys an ultimatum stick to it. This type of disrespect can lead to domestic violence in the home.

I'm not saying that's what you should do. Listen to the other posters here. It's your house, your truck. If they want to act like they run the show, they better support themselves to back it up. A parent is required to make sure their minor children are fed, clothed, sheltered, and un-abused. Provide those things and nothing more until the minor shapes up. To the 19 year old, it's time for him to fly the nest.
