I loaned someone money three years ago is it to late to take them to court?

Depends on where you are located and if you can prove this..

I live in tn an all I have is the check that says loan. It is my fault for not staying in contact with them because I haven't needed the money until recently. I feeling like it's a little to late?

Looks good since the SOL is 6 years. Also the fact that the cancelled check says Loan is a positive.
