    Hi Cat...

If the drain connects to the main sewer drain line that goes to the city sewer or a septic/cesspool then yes, you absolutely MUST have a PTRAP on the drain line. If, however, the washer drain connects to the outside via a drywell or similar then no, you do not need a PTRAP although I would install one just to help keep any bugs out... ;)

Your washer drain should also have a VENT associated with it... does yours?

    Back to you...

Oh yeah the gas from your sewer system will rise up through the pipe and give a nasty smell through out your house. You definitely need a trap on any drain line and make sure water stays in the trap so the gas stays out of your living area.
